Stock Market LIVE: Market breadth was in the favour of bears with over 2,000 stocks in the red as against just 800 in the green on the BSE

Stock Market LIVE Updates today, Monday, June 23, 2025: Sensex and Nifty were trading lower on Monday as investors digested the United States’ bombing of three nuclear facilities in Iran, siding with Israel in the West Asia war.

The BSE Sensex index was at 81,703, lower by 705 points or 0.86 per cent, while the Nifty50 was at 24,899, down 214 points or 0.85 per cent.  Bharat Electronics (BEL), Trent, Adani Ports and Bharti Airtel were the only Sensex gainers today, rising  up to 1.89 per cent. In contrast, Infosys, Hindustan Unilever, HCLTech, TCS, and Reliance Industries were the top laggards.

In the broader markets, the Nifty MidCap slipped by 0.24 per cent, while Nifty SmallCap was flat with a positive bias.

The drawdown in equities came after the US bombed three nuclear sites — Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan — in Iran on Sunday, escalating the war in West Asia. Iran, on its part, has vowed to retaliate and has warned the US of “dire consequences”. Further, Iran’s Parliament has reportedly approved the closure of the Strait of Hormuz following US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites.   Among sectors, broad-based selling was seen. The Nifty IT index fell 1.51 per cent, the Nifty Auto index 0.9 per cent, and the Nifty FMCG 0.78 per cent.  However, defence stocks were rising. The Nifty India Defence index was trading 1.3 per cent higher with Paras Defence, Garden Reach Shipbuilders, Data Patterns, DCX Systems, Bharat Dynamics, and Astra Microwave Systems gaining up to 3 per cent.

Oil prices rise

In the commodities segment, oil prices were trading over 2 per cent higher Monday morning with Brent crude futures at $78.6 per barrel and US WTI crude at $75.44 per barrel.

Stock Market LIVE Updates: Technical view

Stock Market LIVE Updates: Despite the sharp rise on Friday, the pull back from highs in the closing hour, point to reluctance played out in the last month as

well on approach to 25,000. As is, upsides look limited to 25,200-460 band. Being at the upper Bollinger band and with ADX at 13.2, momentum is missing. Inability to float above 25045 will call for dips, but for now, they are less likely to exceed 24,865/827. We will wait for slippage past 24,500/440 to switch sides.

Stock Market LIVE Updates: West Asia conflict’s impact likely to be limited: Vijayakumar, Geojit Investments

Stock Market LIVE Updates: Even though the US bombing of Iran’s three nuclear facilities has worsened the crisis in West Asia, the impact on the market is likely to be limited. The uncertain factor now is the timing and nature of the Iranian response. If Iran targets and damage the US defence facilities in the region or hurts US military personnel seriously, the US response can be huge and this might further worsen the crisis. But the market assessment is that there are limits to what Iran can do against US and Israel. That’s why the early market responses – crude prices, US futures, absence of panic in Asian markets – have been muted.

Even though the possibility of the closure of Hormuz Strait is a threat, it is important to understand that this has always been only  a threat and the Strait had never been closed. The fact is that the closure of Hormuz Strait will harm Iran and Iran’s friend China more than anyone else. The market construct continues to favour a ‘buy on dips’ strategy.
