Stocks looked set to move sideways on Tuesday, with much of Wall Street on vacation and only a couple of economic data releases due between now and the holiday season.

Futures tracking the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 3 points, effectively trading flat. S&P 500 futures and contracts tied to the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 were also unchanged.

The three major indexes all rallied on Monday, putting the S&P within striking distance of its record closing high. Volumes have been light, but investors appear to be in a cheery enough mood in the lead-up to Christmas, with risk assets buoyed by last week’s cooler-than-expected inflation print.

“The stock market is finally starting to eke out some gains for December after a choppy few weeks,” Granite Bay Wealth Management chief investment officer Paul Stanley said. “Low volume and an absence of bad news should keep the Santa Claus rally alive and well for the rest of 2025,” he added.

The market may shrug off delayed third-quarter Gross Domestic Product data due out on Tuesday, as it is backward-looking, but the Conference Board’s consumer confidence reading for December could give a better sense of how the economy is holding up.

The yield on the 10-year Japanese government bond slipped 4 basis points to 2.04% on Tuesday. That’s a positive development: Yields have surged after the Bank of Japan hiked interest rates on Friday, fueling worries that Japanese investors could sell U.S. Treasuries now they can find better returns at home.

Yields on 10-year Treasury notes were down 1 basis point to 4.15% in early trading. The dollar slipped 0.3% against a weighted basket of its peers. Gold futures added another 1.1% to hit a record $4,531 an ounce, while oil prices were roughly flat. Bitcoin dropped 2.1% over the past 24 hours, to $87,489.
