Federal Signal (NYSE:FSS) has had a rough three months with its share price down 7.0%. But if you pay close attention, you might gather that its strong financials could mean that the stock could potentially see an increase in value in the long-term, given how markets usually reward companies with good financial health. In this article, we decided to focus on Federal Signal’s ROE.

Return on equity or ROE is an important factor to be considered by a shareholder because it tells them how effectively their capital is being reinvested. In other words, it is a profitability ratio which measures the rate of return on the capital provided by the company’s shareholders.

Return on equity can be calculated by using the formula:

Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders’ Equity

So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Federal Signal is:

18% = US$236m ÷ US$1.3b (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2025).

The ‘return’ is the yearly profit. That means that for every $1 worth of shareholders’ equity, the company generated $0.18 in profit.

So far, we’ve learned that ROE is a measure of a company’s profitability. Based on how much of its profits the company chooses to reinvest or “retain”, we are then able to evaluate a company’s future ability to generate profits. Assuming all else is equal, companies that have both a higher return on equity and higher profit retention are usually the ones that have a higher growth rate when compared to companies that don’t have the same features.

To begin with, Federal Signal seems to have a respectable ROE. Especially when compared to the industry average of 11% the company’s ROE looks pretty impressive. This certainly adds some context to Federal Signal’s exceptional 21% net income growth seen over the past five years. We reckon that there could also be other factors at play here. Such as – high earnings retention or an efficient management in place.

Next, on comparing with the industry net income growth, we found that Federal Signal’s growth is quite high when compared to the industry average growth of 16% in the same period, which is great to see.
