India and the USA have finally signed a trade deal. Not having an agreement with the US was hurting India earlier. The deal is a clear win-win. India remained firm on not exposing its dairy and agriculture sectors, a stance defended by PM Modi. The agreement includes India buying energy worth USD 500 billion from the US, covering oil, coal and some agricultural products. Securing the deal at relatively low tariffs, cheaper than many Asian peers, should boost corporate profits. With trade deals signed with both the US and the EU within two months, India is firmly moving towards becoming a manufacturing-first nation, and these agreements reinforce that trajectory.
The reduction in tariffs from around 50% to ~18% has come in materially better than consensus expectations. When combined with the recently concluded India–EU trade agreement, this potentially represents one of the strongest external growth stimuli for the Indian economy in 2026.
