Mixed U.S. Stock Market: Semiconductor Surge Lifts Nasdaq, Dow Drops

Major U.S. stock indexes are showing mixed performance at midday on Friday, April 24. Semiconductor stocks are fueling significant gains in technology-focused benchmarks, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average trails behind.

As of approximately 1:17 p.m. ET, the Dow had fallen by 0.3%. In contrast, the S&P 500 had risen 0.6%, and the Nasdaq-100 index posted a 1.8% gain.

Semiconductors Lead the Market

The standout in Friday’s trading is chipmaker Intel. After surpassing analyst expectations in the first quarter of 2026, driven by strong demand for AI data center orders, Intel‘s stock had surged 21.3% at the time of writing. However, Intel represents a small portion of the cap-weighted S&P 500 and Nasdaq-100 indices, and the company was removed from the Dow in November 2024. Intel reached new all-time highs on Friday, surpassing a long-standing peak from the dot-com era.

Intel’s strong earnings report sparked broad gains across the semiconductor sector. Competitor Advanced Micro Devices rose 14%, Broadcom gained 11%, and AI chip leader Nvidia jumped 5% without any separate news of its own.

Mixed Market Signals

A geopolitical development is also influencing market dynamics. Reports indicate that Iran’s foreign minister is traveling to Pakistan for discussions that could restart negotiations with the United States. Oil prices have dropped approximately 2.4% in response. The Dow is more sensitive to energy price movements than the tech-heavy Nasdaq-100.

The Dow contains fewer chip stocks, and Nvidia, though listed, has a lower weighting in the index’s price-based structure. The strength in semiconductors reflects investor confidence in ongoing demand for AI-related computing infrastructure. For long-term investors, the day serves as a reminder that diversification has trade-offs: it limits full exposure to outsized gains in sectors like semiconductors, but also reduces risk during sector downturns.
