Stock Market Live Updates: Indian benchmark indices opened lower on Friday (April 19) amid heightened geopolitical tension that triggered massive selloffs of global equities. Nifty opened 134.30, or 0.61 per cent lower at 21,861.50 while Sensex inched 489.34, or 0.68 per cent lower at 71,999.60.

On the sectoral front, Nifty IT index is trading at 320 points below while Auto index is 200 pts down. FMCG and Metal remain only two indices that have not participated in today’s bearish run.

The Indian Rupee opened at a record low of 83.55 against US dollar. Meanwhile, other Asian currency also weakened against their American counterpart. China’s yuan weakened to a five-month low against the dollar pressured by reports of an Israeli attack on Iran that sparked rising safe haven bets.

All major Asian indices traded in line with their US peers. Japan’s Nikkei, which is leading losses in Asian market, tanked 2.50 per cent lower at 37,118.60 while South Korea’s Kospi slipped 1.76 per cent at 2,588.01.

US futures plunged Thursday evening as conflict reignited between Israel and Iran, as per media a report. US-based NBC News reported that Israel retaliated against its arch-rival Iran through barrages of missiles. Tel Aviv’s response lies against the Iranian action last Saturday. Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) remained the only major index to close in Greece with 0.06 per cent up. Tech heavy NASDAQ slipped 0.52 per cent lower at 15,601.52 while S&P500 inched 0.22 per cent lower at 5,011.12.

Oil prices advanced $3 a barrel in reaction to reports that Israeli missile strike on Iranian soil, sparking concerns that the Middle-East oil supply could be disrupted. Iran’s Fars news agency, however, claimed explosions were heard at an airport in the Iranian city of Isafahan.

Brent futures were up $2.57 per cent at $89.33 a barrel. The most active US West Texas Intermediate contract climbed $2.65 per cent to $84.92 per barrel.
