Longtime ESPN analyst Michael Wilbon thinks the nonstop coverage of Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has been silly. And he blames the network that he works for.
“He’s irrelevant now. What makes him relevant now? This network talking about him every day — day in, day out — as if they’re hanging on and waiting for Patrick Mahomes three years ago,“ Wilbon said on ESPN this week. ”He’s irrelevant at this point.
“He’s not LeBron James; he’s not Tom Brady. He’s not playing that way into his 40s. This whole thing is overstated. They’re a third-place team in their own division. Unlikely to be able to pass Cincinnati or Baltimore this year. We’re talking about now. We’re not talking about what Aaron Rodgers has been.
“So all this breathless waiting on Aaron Rodgers, we’re gonna chronicle it every day – I’m blaming this network. Because every time I turn on all of our shows, except one, I hear about Aaron Damn Rodgers.”

Wilbon clarified that he’s not bashing Rodgers. He’s attacking the nature of today’s media.
“It makes it sound like I’m criticizing Aaron Rodgers. I’m not,” Wilbon said. “I’m criticizing us. I’m criticizing ‘Breaking news.’ I’m criticizing ‘Every day we’ve got to talk about Aaron Rodgers.’ No we don’t. He’s irrelevant. Period.”
Rodgers is certainly not in the prime of his career anymore, but he was an upgrade from what the Steelers have had at quarterback in recent years.
Rodgers finished 15th in the NFL in passing yards (3,322) last season, along with posting an impressive 24-to-7 touchdown-to-interception ratio. He played in 16 of the 17 regular season games, only missing the Week 12 game against the Chicago Bears due to a suffering multiple fractures in his non-throwing (left) wrist.
Rodgers and the Steelers got embarrassed in the Wild Card game against the Houston Texans, however, losing 30-6. Perhaps under Mike McCarthy‘s leadership and the new weapons on offense, the Steelers will win a playoff game for the first time since Jan. 15, 2017.
