If you were planning to trade some securities on the American stock exchanges on June 19, you’ll have to wait due to Juneteenth.

Juneteenth is a holiday that commemorates June 19, 1865, the day that the last slaves in the United States were freed.

Specifically, Juneteenth acknowledges when Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger and Union forces arrived in Galveston, Texas, and informed the Texans there that previously enslaved Black Americans were now free.

Juneteenth also honors the on-going fight for civil rights in the United States.

Will the stock market open on Juneteenth

The New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq will be closed for trading on June 19, 2026, in observance of the federal holiday of Juneteenth, according to their websites.

“Both major stock exchanges closed for the holiday for the first time in 2022, after Juneteenth was designated as a federal holiday in 2021,” Fidelity said on their website. “The NYSE has already announced it will observe the holiday on June 18 in 2027 because June 19 falls on a Saturday that year and be closed on June 19 in 2028.”

The stock and bond markets will reopen on Monday, June 22, and it will be business as usual on Wall Street for a few days. The next scheduled stock market closure is on Friday, July 3, 2026, in observance of Independence Day.

Who made Juneteenth made a federal holiday

In 2021, then-President Joe Biden signed a bill into law that made Juneteenth a federal holiday, officially designating June 19 as Juneteenth National Independence Day.

“By making Juneteenth a federal holiday, all Americans can feel the power of this day and learn from our history,” Biden said on June 17, 2021.

Juneteenth being a federal holiday also means that government workers get a paid day off of work. And, depending on your work and where you live, private-sector employees can also get the day off.

Where does the name ‘Juneteenth’ come from?

Juneteenth is a combination of “June” and “nineteenth” in honor of June 19, 1865 – the day Granger announced the abolition of slavery in Texas. The holiday is also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day.
