TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index fell in late-morning trading, weighed down by losses in the heavyweight financial sector, while U.S. stock markets were mixed.

The S&P/TSX composite index was down 41.77 points at 35,222.08.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 110.98 points at 52,035.44. The S&P 500 index was up 23.45 points at 7,481.14, while the Nasdaq composite was up 144.37 points at 25,664.61.

The Canadian dollar traded for 71.12 cents US compared with 71.36 cents US on Friday.

The September crude oil contract was down 48 cents US at US$81.30 per barrel.

The August gold contract was down US$1.30 at US$4,017.50 an ounce.
