The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) will remain closed on May 1 on account of Maharashtra Day and on May 20 for the fifth phase of polling for the Lok Sabha.

Trading in derivatives, equities, SLBs, currency derivatives as well as interest rate derivatives will remain shut on the two days.

After Maharashtra Day, trading will resume on May 2 on both NSE and BSE. On May 20, all six Lok Sabha seats in  Mumbai along with seven other in Maharashtra will go to the polls. Both BSE and NSE are headquartered in Mumbai. As many as 49 seats spread across eight states and union territories will vote on the that day. Trading will resume the next day.

In 2024, NSE and BSE have a total of 16 holidays in addition to the on weekends, when exchanges are closed.

At 11.15 am, the Sensex was up 559.75 points, or 0.76 percent, at 74,289.91, and the Nifty was up 117.50 points, or 0.52 percent, at 22,537.50. About 1,829 shares advanced, 1,379 declined and 140 remained unchanged.

IndusInd Bank, ICICI Bank, and Kotak Mahindra Bank were the top Nifty gainers, while Apollo Hospital and HCLTech were the biggest losers.
