Is the stock market open on Labor Day in 2026? The answer to this question is no. The stock market will be closed Monday, September 7, for the Labor Day holiday. Bond traders will get an extended weekend, too, with the bond market closed on Monday.

Unlike some stock market holidays, however, there are no early hours ahead of Labor Day. The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), Nasdaq Stock Market and bond market all have regular trading hours on Friday, September 4.

The long holiday weekend follows a volatile stretch for the stock market. Through the September 2 close, the blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average is up 1.4% since the start of the third quarter, while the broader S&P 500 is 2.2% higher and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite is flat.

These returns could be challenged as we round out the quarter, considering September is historically the weakest month for stocks. “Since 1950, it is the only month with a negative average return, at roughly -0.6%, and the S&P 500 has finished the month higher less than half the time,” says George Smith, portfolio strategist for LPL Financial. “That weakness has been even more pronounced over the past five and 10 years, so the seasonal caution flag is a fair one to raise.”

That doesn’t mean investors should be spooked out of positions. Rather, they should use any potential weakness as an opportunity to dollar-cost average into high-quality positions, such as these five core stocks.

And brighter days are likely on the horizon, with the final three months of the year a typically bullish stretch for stocks.

Meanwhile, for those wondering what time does the market open for regular trading hours, both the Nasdaq Stock Market and the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) run from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm Eastern time Monday through Friday.

Are banks open on Labor Day? The answer to that question is no. Monday, September 7, is one of several bank holidays in 2026, and so banks will also be closed.
