What Is The Market Telling Us

Tesla’s shares are quite volatile and have had 18 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The previous big move we wrote about was 28 days ago when the stock dropped 6% on the news that U.S. safety regulators said they were evaluating the rollout of the company’s new Cybercab, compounding a sell-the-news reaction to a launch event. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration told Reuters it is in contact with Tesla regarding the two-seater autonomous vehicle, which the company just launched for ride-hailing in limited areas of Austin, Texas. The regulatory scrutiny centers on the Cybercab’s design, which lacks the steering wheels, pedals, and mirrors generally required under federal auto safety standards. The probe immediately followed an invite-only evening event that frustrated retail investors.

Tesla declined to publicly livestream the showcase, fueling fears that the near-term commercial impact of the robotaxi network was already fully priced into the stock’s recent run-up.

Tesla is down 15.3% since the beginning of the year, and at $371.21 per share, it is trading 24.2% below its 52-week high of $489.88 from December 2025. Despite the year-to-date decline, investors who bought $1,000 worth of Tesla’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $1,425.
