Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) stock rose about 2% in morning trading Monday after Chief Executive Elon Musk confirmed discussions with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. over possible cooperation on the Terafab chip project.
Musk said the talks remain preliminary, leaving the final structure of any partnership unsettled. The discussions follow reports that TSMC is considering ways to participate in Terafab, a planned semiconductor manufacturing initiative tied to Musk’s companies.
Terafab is intended to provide custom chips for Tesla, SpaceX and xAI as their demand for computing capacity expands. TSMC could potentially operate a Texas factory or provide manufacturing technology while Musk’s companies retain a controlling stake. The venture is being developed in Texas.
Just discussions, but something may come of it, Musk said on X.
The development also creates questions around Intel’s position in the project, as the chipmaker is already a named partner and has been linked to the facility’s planned manufacturing technology. Intel shares fell about 2% in morning trading, while TSMC’s U.S.-listed shares gained about 1%, according to market reports.
