Shares of Comcast (CMCSA) currently trade at 6.7 times earnings. That multiple sits at less than a third of the 22.7 times commanded by the median S&P 500 company. Over the past twelve months, the shares fell 19.7%, dividends included. The broader S&P 500 returned 17.3% over that same period. That could signal a sound business on sale, or it might just reflect a fair price for an operation that has stopped growing. So what does a buyer actually get for that price?
Comcast’s Spare Cash Is Large Next To Its Price
At that valuation, investors are buying a company that turned 26.0% of its revenue into cash from operations over its latest twelve months. Free cash flow over those same months equaled 23.7% of its market value.
This cash generation relies on a broad set of businesses. Residential Connectivity & Platforms stands as the largest segment, bringing in $70.7 billion of revenue in fiscal 2025. Two smaller divisions posted growth that year. Theme Parks revenue rose 14.1%, and Business Services Connectivity revenue rose 5.5%.
Comcast’s Operating Margin Has Fallen To A Ten-Year Low
Comcast is currently keeping less of every sale as profit. The operating margin dropped to 14.7% in the twelve months to June 2026. By contrast, the company averaged a 17.4% margin across the three latest twelve-month periods, this one included. Looking back, Comcast’s twelve-month margin has not been lower at any quarter end from fiscal Q3 2016 on.
At the same time, the largest business segment is getting smaller. Revenue in Residential Connectivity & Platforms fell by 0.5% in fiscal 2024, and then fell another 1.2% in fiscal 2025. Media revenue also fell by 3.8% in fiscal 2025. Altogether, total revenue grew only 0.6% in the twelve months to June 2026.
Furthermore, Comcast carries heavy debt. Its total debt equaled 120% of its market value at the latest close. For perspective, total debt across the S&P 500 as a whole stood at just 20.2% of market value.
Is Comcast’s Broadband Pivot Lifting Its Margin?
The numbers do not show a lift yet. In fiscal Q2 2026 alone, Comcast recorded an operating margin of 17.2%, compared to 19.8% in fiscal Q2 2025. Revenue fell 1.2% from a year earlier in that quarter. Even so, management noted in its fiscal Q2 2026 results that a strategic pivot in broadband is gaining traction. Management also called that specific period its best wireless quarter ever.
A buyer paying under seven times earnings is not simply betting that the broader market has overlooked a sound business. The buyer is betting that management stops the margin from falling while Comcast keeps producing cash. Investors will get more clarity when the company releases its next report, expected on or around October 22, 2026. This report will detail the operating margin for fiscal Q3 2026. A figure below the 17.7% reported in fiscal Q3 2025 would mean the margin is still falling.
