Why DaVita (DVA) Stock Is Nosediving

What Happened?

Shares of dialysis provider DaVita Inc. (NYSE:DVA) fell 7.1% in the afternoon session after Axios reported that the Department of Health and Human Services released a new kidney care plan from the Trump administration.

According to the report, the initiative calls for introducing more competition into treatment markets and incentivizing innovation across the sector. The federal plan also places a greater emphasis on preventive care to treat chronic kidney disease before it reaches late stages. The policy aims to support new treatment approaches and encourage competition while prioritizing early intervention for patients with kidney conditions.

The shares closed the day at $175.08, down 6.4% from the previous close.

What Is The Market Telling Us

DaVita’s shares are not very volatile and have only had 9 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful, although it might not be something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The biggest move we wrote about over the last year was 9 months ago when the stock gained 25.3% on the news that the company reported fourth-quarter results that topped Wall Street’s expectations and issued a robust earnings forecast for 2026.

The company’s total revenue for the quarter reached $3.62 billion, a 9.9% year-over-year increase that beat the consensus estimate of $3.51 billion. DaVita also reported an adjusted profit of $3.40 per share, which was 6.5% above analysts’ projections.

Looking ahead, the company provided a strong outlook, guiding for 2026 adjusted earnings per share with a midpoint of $14.30. This forecast significantly exceeded Wall Street’s prior expectations, signaling strong confidence in future profitability and driving positive investor sentiment.

DaVita is up 51.7% since the beginning of the year, but at $173.72 per share, it is still trading 27.9% below its 52-week high of $240.96 from July 2026. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of DaVita’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $1,522.

ONE MORE THING: The $21 AI Application Stock Wall Street Forgot. While Wall Street obsesses over who’s building AI, one company is already using it to print money. And nobody’s paying attention.

AI chip stocks trade at ridiculous valuations. This company processes a trillion consumer signals monthly using AI and trades at a third of the price. The gap won’t last. The institutions will figure it out. You need to see this first. Read the FREE Report Before They Notice.
