Quick Read

  • UPS stock sits nearly flat over a decade, with $1,000 growing to just $1,485 as dividends delivered $466 of that gain.

  • The S&P 500 returned 257% over the same 10 years, turning $1,000 into $3,569, dwarfing UPS’s total return.

  • UPS offers a 6.21% dividend yield at 13 times forward earnings, but its $5.4 billion planned payout leaves little room for raises.

From Pandemic Darling to Deliberate Downsizer

Ten years ago, United Parcel Service (NYSE:UPS) was a steady dividend payer trading at $107.76. Then the pandemic turned living rooms into loading docks. Parcel demand surged, pricing firmed, and the stock closed October 2021 at $213.47 before reaching $233.72 in February 2022.

The hangover lasted years. Volumes normalized, a 2023 Teamsters contract raised labor costs, and management chose to shrink its biggest customer by shedding low-margin Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) volume. In 2025, UPS cut about 48,000 positions and closed 93 facilities while chasing premium shipments.
