On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 29, 2026, Murphy USA (NYSE:MUSA) announced that its store construction pipeline now supports opening 50 new locations annually. Accelerating store openings gives the company a clear path to steady earnings growth across commodity cycles. Flexible supply sourcing and low retail prices help defend market share when volatile energy markets squeeze competitors.
Three things management said stand out.
1. Store Construction Pipeline Accelerates to 50 Locations Annually
Inconsistent store opening cadence in prior years limited earnings growth despite favorable retail fuel conditions. Management has now built a robust construction pipeline with 55 sites actively under construction to maintain a predictable opening pace.
And as you know, our issue really has not been performance and still is not. Our issue has been pace of store openings.

2. Market Volatility Squeezes Competitors While Benefiting Supply Optionality
Elevated fuel prices and tight wholesale supply pressure smaller, independent convenience stores. Murphy USA uses its supply network to buy fuel below terminal wholesale prices, known as rack rates, turning industry volatility into higher profits.
And as long as supplies remain tight, we are going to expect continued volatility which actually is an opportunity for the Murphy USA business because we are built for this environment…

3. Drivers Trade Down to Low-Cost Fuel Options
High gas prices are forcing consumers to budget carefully, leading to a nearly 2.5% increase in sales of regular unleaded gasoline (RUL) during the quarter. Driver traffic is shifting away from premium fuels and competing stations toward lower-priced options.
As you are right, we are seeing customers. Both our customers trading down from premium and mid grade, but also customers trading in from other competitors because of our low price.

Looking Ahead
Operational momentum is building across the store network, and management is not hiding its satisfaction with current results. Geographic scale and flexible fuel sourcing provide structural advantages, while leadership strategically monitors wholesale supply tightness and pricing discipline.
We are pleased with those results we have delivered so far this year. We are also even more confident in the underlying strength of our business.
