Stock futures turned lower after Wall Street got a hotter-than-expected inflation reading paired with weak jobless claims data.

S&P 500 futures were down 0.2%. Nasdaq 100 futures were down 0.3%. Dow futures were down 0.1%.

The yield on the 2-year Treasury note was down to 3.9845%. The 10-year yield fell to 4.0589%.

The consumer price index rose at a 2.4% annual rate in September, while initial jobless claims rose to 258,000 last week. Both figures were higher than economists’ expectations, according to FactSet.

Jobless claims this month could be impacted by severe weather in the parts of the U.S.

“That’s a pretty significant miss, but looking at the state-by-state numbers, the ones impacted by Hurricane Helene all saw large increases,” writes Bespoke Investment Group co-founder Paul Hickey. “North Carolina, for example, saw claims surge by over 8K alone.”
