The Baltimore Orioles put third baseman Ramón Urías on the injured list with a hamstring strain before their game against Kansas City. The Orioles called up top prospect Coby Mayo from Triple-A Norfolk. Manager Brandon Hyde said he didn’t think Urías would be out too long. Urías has been a bright spot for the Orioles during their slow start to the season. He’s hit .292 with two homers. Now he joins a lengthy list of Baltimore players on the IL. That includes outfielders Colton Cowser and Tyler O’Neill, infielder Jordan Westburg and several key pitchers. Mayo is baseball’s No. 12 prospect according to MLB Pipeline.

Rain is making for a soggy 151st Kentucky Derby, with the Churchill Downs dirt strip listed as sloppy and horse racing fans protecting their fancy hats and clothing with clear plastic ponchos. A field of 19 3-year-olds was set to run 1 1/4 miles for a $3.1 million prize and the garland of red roses shortly after 7 p.m. ET Saturday. Rain fell on and off throughout the day and the 60-degree (15-Celsius) temperature made it feel cool for the horses and humans. That didn’t stop fans from betting, drinking, eating, smoking and shopping for souvenirs. It was the first Derby run on a sloppy track since 2019, when Country House won via disqualification.

New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe injured his left shoulder in a 3-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays but remained in the game. Volpe felt pain when he landed hard on his unsuccessful attempt for a backhand stab on Christopher Morel’s eighth-inning hit, which sparked a two-run rally. Volpe felt a pop but remained in the game and an X-ray was negative. The 24-year-old Gold Glove winner said he will see how he feels Sunday before deciding whether additional tests are needed.

Marie Poulin scored two goals – the first 11 seconds in – and the Montreal Victoire clinched the PWHL’s top seed to the playoffs by holding off the New York Siren 3-2. The Victoire received help to the top seed when Ottawa beat Toronto 2-1 in overtime earlier in the day. Toronto needed to beat Ottawa and a New York win over Montreal for the Sceptres to secure the top seed. On Sunday, Montreal will choose its opening-round playoff opponent — either three-seed Ottawa or No. 4-seed and defending champion Minnesota. Toronto, the second seed, will play the other team.

Jake Meyers homered twice and set a career high with seven RBIs, helping the Houston Astros beat the Chicago White Sox 8-3. Batting ninth, Meyers had four hits in his third career multihomer game. Hunter Brown struck out nine in six innings, winning his fifth straight decision. The right-hander allowed three runs — all in the first inning — and four hits. Houston had lost two in a row, including the opener of the three-game series on Friday. Andrew Vaughn had two hits and two RBIs for last-place Chicago. Fraser Ellard got the loss.

Corey Seager has been activated from the injured list after the Texas Rangers lost eight of the 10 games he missed because of a right hamstring strain. The five-time All-Star shortstop had hit .370 with three homers over a 12-game span before straining his right hamstring while running to first base against the Athletics on April 22. The Rangers made the move before their game against Seattle on Saturday night. Infielder Jonathan Ornelas was optioned to Triple-A Round Rock. The Rangers scored 29 runs in the 10 games without Seager, but 15 of those came in one game.

Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Craig Yoho has been sent to the minor leagues two days after he walked four batters and allowed five runs in an inning of relief. The Brewers sent Yoho to Triple-A Nashville and called up right-hander Elvin Rodríguez before their Saturday game with the Chicago Cubs. Brewers manager Pat Murphy says Yoho “remains a big part of our future.” Yoho possesses an outstanding changeup that enabled him to dominate in the minors. But he wasn’t able to carry over that success to the big leagues. He has a 9.53 ERA in five relief appearances.

Raphinha and Fermín López have saved Barcelona from a stumble at relegated Valladolid, helping it close on the La Liga title before a crunch Champions League match at Inter Milan. Halftime substitute Raphinha canceled Valladolid’s first-half opener in the 54th minute. López continued his quietly superb season by bagging the winner six minutes later for a 2-1 road victory on Saturday. Hansi Flick played with fire by rotating his starting 11 ahead of Tuesday’s trip to Milan. Barcelona and Inter will see which can tip the balance in their semifinal after delivering a 3-3 thriller this week in Spain.

ATLANTA — The other notable international acquisition of the Los Angeles Dodgers’ offseason this winter is on the verge of his major league debut.

Carmelo Anthony is joining NBC Sports as a studio analyst when NBC and Peacock begin their NBA coverage in October. The announcement was made on Saturday afternoon during NBC’s coverage of the Kentucky Derby. Anthony will be enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame in September. He was a 10-time NBA all-star and is currently 10th on the NBA all-time scoring list with 28,289 points. He also was part of the U.S. team in four Olympics, including three gold-medal winning squads. NBC Sports said in a release that Anthony is expected to be in the studio one or more nights per week through the playoffs.

Britta Curl-Salemme and Sophie Jacques each scored two goals and the Minnesota Frost tied a PWHL record for goals scored in a game beating the Boston Fleet 8-1 clinching the final playoff berth. On Sunday, top-seeded Montreal will choose its opening-round playoff opponent — either three-seed Ottawa or No. 4-seed and defending champion Minnesota. Toronto, the second seed, will face the other team. The eight goals ties the highest mark for goals scored by a PWHL team in the league’s two-year history. Ottawa beat the same Minnesota team 8-3 on Feb. 13. Jessica Digirolamo scored Boston’s lone goal at 15:33 of the third period. The Fleet were eliminated from post-seaon play with the loss.

NEW YORK — Austin Wells had given the Yankees something to sink their teeth into.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have recalled South Korean All-Star Hyeseong Kim and placed second baseman Tommy Edman on the injured list. Kim agreed to a $12.5 million, three-year contract with the Dodgers on Jan. 3 and opened the season with Triple-A Oklahoma City. Edman was placed on the injured list after missing two games with a sore right ankle. Edman ranks second on the team with eight home runs and 24 RBIs. Edman’s injury creates an opportunity for Kim to make his major league debut. The Dodgers listed Chris Taylor as the starting second baseman against the Atlanta Braves.

Kenny Atkinson has one simple message for his Cleveland Cavaliers going into their Eastern Conference semifinals series against the Indiana Pacers. Put your track shoes on. The top-seeded Cavaliers had the NBA’s top offense in the regular season, averaging 121.9 points. The fourth-seeded Pacers averaged 117.4 points, but have one of the quickest teams in the league, and like to go full throttle. The series starts on Sunday night at Cleveland’s Rocket Arena.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — For an 18-lap appetizer before Sunday’s Crypto.com Miami Grand Prix main course, Saturday’s F1 Sprint proved more filling on action than some full-length races.

BOSTON — The Red Sox lineup will be without Triston Casas for the remainder of the season after the first baseman ruptured his left patellar tendon in Friday night’s game against the Minnesota Twins.

Fred VanVleet combined for 55 points in the last two games to lead the Houston Rockets back from a 3-1 deficit and force a deciding Game 7 against the Golden State Warriors in their first-round playoff series. Now the question becomes if Postseason Fred and these scrappy, young Rockets can win a third straight game to finally vanquish longtime playoff nemesis Stephen Curry and Co. and advance to face Minnesota in the Western Conference semifinals. After making just 6 of 29 3-pointers in the first three games of the series, VanVleet has gone 18 for 27 in the last three.

Curtis Mead and José Caballero had RBIs in a two-run eighth inning, and the Tampa Bay Rays overcame Aaron Judge’s 11th home run to beat the New York Yankees 3-2 and stop a four-game losing streak. Judge homered in the first against Zack Littell, who retired his next 11 batters before Austin Wells started the fifth with his sixth homer for a 2-1 lead. Judge has four homers in his last six games. The two-time AL MVP is hitting a major league-leading .432 and has a 29-game on-base streak. The Rays finished with six steals.

Jim Dent has died a week before his 86th birthday. Dent was one of the top Black golfers of his generation who won 12 times on the PGA Tour Champions. He started out as a caddie at the municipal course in Augusta, Georgia, known as The Patch. His son is now the head pro, and Tiger Woods is part of the restoration project. Dent went from caddying to finally making his way onto the PGA Tour. He never won a tour event. His best finish was runner-up to Jack Nicklaus at the Walt Disney World Open Invitational.

Fast bowler Yash Dayal has held his nerve to give Royal Challengers Bengaluru a sensational two-run win over Chennai Super Kings in a last-ball Indian Premier League thriller. Chennai was already eliminated from playoffs contention but needed 15 off the last over to prevent Bengaluru from topping the table. Dayal faced Ravindra Jadeja, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and impact player Shivam Dube and used full tosses and yorkers to dismiss Dhoni off the third ball and concede three singles off the last three balls. Chennai was stranded on 211-5 after nearly chasing down Bengaluru’s 213-5.

Davis Riley eagled his final hole to make the cut on the number at the Byron Nelson after the PGA Tour’s first two-stroke penalty in the experimental use of distance measuring devices. Riley self-reported the violation on No. 17, his eighth hole, when his distance finder flashed a slope measurement, which isn’t allowed. This is the third of four weeks that players are allowed to use the devices to measure distance as the tour tries to address pace-of-play issues. The 28-year-old Dallas resident made an 11-foot putt for eagle on the par-5 ninth to finish 5 under.

Katerina Mrazova scored 2:52 into overtime to lift the Ottawa Charge to a 2-1 regular-season finale win over the Toronto Sceptres and a playoff berth. Brianne Jenner also scored for Ottawa. Gwyneth Philips stopped 13 shots. The Charge came into the game Saturday needing a win of any kind, or a Minnesota loss against Boston later Saturday, to secure their first postseason appearance in the PWHL. Ottawa lost 5-2 to Toronto in the regular-season finale last season needing a regulation win to secure a playoff spot. Both teams’ playoff opponents will be determined Sunday.

Austin Cindric will start on the second row for the NASCAR Cup race at Texas. That comes after a week of celebrating a win at Talladega and a lot of attention paid to an expletive-laden radio rant directed toward him by teammate Joey Logano during Team Penske’s first win of the season. Cindric says they spoke this week and he’s all good going into Sunday’s race. Cindric qualified third in his Ford for the 11th Cup race this season. Carson Hocevar earned his first Cup pole in the Spire Motorsports Chevrolet, making the 22-year-old the youngest pole winner ever at the 1 1/2-mile Texas track.

Aryna Sabalenka has beaten Coco Gauff in straight sets to win her record-tying third Madrid Open. No. 1-ranked Sabalenka powered through the first set and edged the American in a tiebreaker for 6-3, 7-6 (3) on the outdoor clay court. Sabalenka added to titles in Madrid in 2021 and 2023 and equaled Petra Kvitova’s tournament record.

Astros slugger Yordan Alvarez was held out of Saturday’s game against the White Sox in Chicago with right hand inflammation. Houston manager Joe Espada said he didn’t believe the injury was serious and Alvarez could return for Sunday’s series finale. The three-time All-Star’s condition has been cumulative and not related to a single event. “He’s just been sore for a couple of days,” Espada said.

San Diego outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr. is back in the lineup for the Padres less than 24 hours after taking a pitch the forearm. Tatis exited San Diego’s 9-4 victory over the Pirates in the third inning after getting drilled in the left forearm on a 93 mph sinker from Pittsburgh starter Mitch Keller. Padres manager Mike Shildt said Saturday that X-rays were negative. While Tatis will be dealing with some soreness, the swelling from the contusion had dissipated and he was cleared to play. Tatis was batting leadoff against Pittsburgh’s Bailey Falter.

Napoli hasn’t let flares and delays affect its performance as Antonio Conte’s side ground out a 1-0 win at Lecce to take firm control of Serie A. Giacomo Raspadori scored the only goal to send Napoli six points clear of second-placed Inter Milan. Napoli’s match on Saturday was halted for several minutes after Lecce fans threw flares and fireworks onto the field. Lecce remains just a point above the relegation zone. Parma and Cagliari had to postpone their celebrations of securing Serie A safety after they lost to Como and Udinese respectively.

Scottie Scheffler still has a six-shot lead at his hometown CJ Cup Byron Nelson after the rest of the field completed the weather-delayed second round. The top-ranked player is 18 under with the low round each of the first two days, a 10-under 61 followed by a 63 that was interrupted halfway through by a six-hour weather delay. Scheffler’s 36-hole lead is the biggest in Nelson history. Sam Stevens, a native of nearby Fort Worth now living in Wichita, Kansas, is 12 under after consecutive 65s. Defending champion Taylor Pendrith missed the cut on under the number at 4 under.

Carson Hocevar has earned his first NASCAR Cup pole with a qualifying lap of 191.659 mph at Texas. He is on the front row with Cup points leader William Byron, also in a Chevrolet. Defending race winner Chase Elliott qualified 29th.

The first round of the NHL playoff concludes with Game 7 between the regular-season league-best Winnipeg Jets and the Western Conference eighth-seeded St. Louis Blues. The Blues chased likely Vezina Trophy-winning goaltender Connor Hellebuyck in all three of their victories, all of them coming in St. Louis. Game 7 is back north of the U.S.-Canada border in Winnipeg, where the Jets have won all of their home games in the series. The Blues are led in scoring by Cam Fowler, who set a franchise record for points by a defenseman in a playoff series.

Lando Norris beat McLaren Racing teammate Oscar Piastri to win the sprint race held ahead of qualifying for the Miami Grand Prix. The 18-lap sprint was eventful even before it started as heavy rain drenched the course and Charles Leclerc crashed in the wet conditions driving his Ferrari out to the grid. The start of the race was then delayed because drivers said the conditions were too dangerous. And when it finally went green with 18-year-old Kimi Antonelli leading as the youngest pole-winner in F1 history, his time out front was brief. He went off course as Piastri beat Antonelli to the first turn.

A revamped and young Paris Saint-Germain has suffered a second straight Ligue 1 loss. Champion PSG lost at Strasbourg 2-1. With the match coming between two legs of the Champions League semifinal against Arsenal, PSG coach Luis Enrique rotated his team. Only Joao Neves was retained in the starting XI. PSG started with four players born in 2006 or later: Warren Zaïre-Emery, Senny Mayulu, Axel Tape and Ibrahim Mbaye. PSG hosts Arsenal on Wednesday with a 1-0 lead from the first leg.

McLaren Racing boss Zak Brown wants the FIA to adopt a rule that prohibits teams from making baseless allegations against their rivals. Brown floated the idea after using a water bottle on pit lane that had multiple large “TIRE WATER” labels affixed on the bottle. It was Brown’s way of trolling Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner, who allegedly complained to Formula 1’s governing body that McLaren was using water to manage its tire temperature. Brown wants the FIA to require teams to formally file allegations and pay a fee to have them investigated as a means to stop the practice.

An Olympic track medalist is charged in Florida with punching a female hurdler who also competed in the Olympics. A Broward County Sheriff’s Office arrest report says that Fred Kerley, 29, allegedly hit Alaysha Johnson with a closed fist at a hotel near Fort Lauderdale on Thursday. Kerley is charged with misdemeanor battery in the incident that left Johnson with a bloody nose. Kerley won a bronze medal in the 100-meter race at the Paris Olympic Games in 2024, where Johnson also competed. The arrest report says they previously had a relationship and got into an argument at the Florida hotel. Kerley’s lawyer says people should not judge until all the facts come out.

Thorpedo Anna is headed for a checkup at a veterinary clinic after the reigning Horse of the Year finished a surprising seventh in her return to Churchill Downs. She was jostled in between horses in a race to the first turn and began to fade by the top of the stretch in Friday’s $1 million La Troienne for fillies and mares. She was coming off a victory in the Apple Blossom Handicap on April 12 in Arkansas. Trainer Ken McPeek says on social media that the first-turn incident may have thrown Thorpedo Anna off her game or the three-week turnaround from her last race may have been too quick. He says she’ll have X-rays on her knees and ankles and visit an equine hospital in Lexington for further examination.

Yussuf Poulsen has scored in the fourth minute of stoppage time for Leipzig to draw with Bayern Munich 3-3 and postpone the Bundesliga leader’s party. Bayern is all but certain to win the championship. Bayer Leverkusen can still mathematically catch the Bavarian powerhouse and defend its title by winning its remaining three games while making up a goal difference of 30 goals — if Bayern loses its final two matches. Bayern star Harry Kane was suspended against Leipzig because of an accumulation of yellow cards and has been delayed yet again from celebrating his first career title.

Leeds was promoted to the Premier League as second-division champion after Manor Solomon’s dramatic winner in stoppage time. Solomon’s late goal sealed a 2-1 comeback win over relegated Plymouth and saw Leeds top the Championship — edging out second-placed Burnley on goal difference. Both teams had clinched promotion last week but fought to go up as champion. The next four teams in the standings enter a playoff for the final promotion spot. They are Sheffield United, Sunderland, Coventry and Bristol City.

South Africa fast bowler Kagiso Rabada says he is serving a provisional suspension after testing positive for a recreational drug. Rabada had left the Indian Premier League last month, saying at the time he returned home for personal reasons. Rabada now says in a statement that “This was due to my returning an adverse analytical finding for the use of a recreational drug.” He says he is deeply sorry and is looking forward to returning to the game. It was unclear whether he would be able to play in South Africa’s World Test Championship final against Australia at Lord’s next month.
