My top 10 things to watch Monday, Nov. 4
1. Stocks opened little changed as investors await the U.S. presidential election on Tuesday. As I wrote in my Sunday column for Investing Club members, trading on this election is a bit of a sucker’s bet that’s not worth playing. In the meantime, we’re deep in corporate earnings, which is something I understand and can opine on. So I ran through 11 surprising things about this earnings season that you can store up and pull out when the election is confirmed, including some buys and my favorite stock so far.
2. Viking Therapeutics surges ahead of Eli Lilly with a potential pill for obesity. Eli Lilly is a Club stock but it had a confusing quarter. The diabetes-and-obesity drug giant posted disappointing third-quarter results and lowered its full-year sales guidance.
3. Virtually no money is indexed to Club name Nvidia but shares were up 2% in the premarket after S&P Dow Jones Indices announced late Friday that the chipmaker would replace rival Intel in the 30-stock Dow. Intel, which reported better-than-expected results Thursday, should be up and Nvidia down. The change will take effect at the end of the week.
