My top 10 things to watch Monday, Dec. 9

1. Omnicom Group announced a takeover of rival Interpublic Group, an all-stock deal that would create an advertising giant. You wouldn’t consider this merger if the Biden administration’s strict antitrust enforcement was set to continue. As I wrote in my Sunday column for Investing Club subscribers, President-elect Donald Trump’s team should be more supportive of M&A.

2. From the get-go this morning, there’s been huge buying in Palantir and Super Micro Computer. Palantir, which has already more than quadrupled this year, is up more than 7%. Formerly high-flying Super Micro is up more than 9%. The positive action in Oracle, which reports after Monday’s close, also caught my eye.

3. Nvidia shares dropped on a report that China’s competition regulators opened an investigation into the Club holding and leading artificial intelligence chipmaker. Perhaps this is why Nvidia stock was down so hard Friday when some others in its cohort were up? In any case, Nvidia has found itself in the geopolitical crosshairs once again.
