It is hard to get excited after looking at News’ (NASDAQ:NWSA) recent performance, when its stock has declined 5.3% over the past month. However, stock prices are usually driven by a company’s financials over the long term, which in this case look pretty respectable. Particularly, we will be paying attention to News’ ROE today.

Return on equity or ROE is an important factor to be considered by a shareholder because it tells them how effectively their capital is being reinvested. In short, ROE shows the profit each dollar generates with respect to its shareholder investments.

ROE can be calculated by using the formula:

Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders’ Equity

So, based on the above formula, the ROE for News is:

6.2% = US$561m ÷ US$9.0b (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2024).

The ‘return’ is the amount earned after tax over the last twelve months. That means that for every $1 worth of shareholders’ equity, the company generated $0.06 in profit.

Thus far, we have learned that ROE measures how efficiently a company is generating its profits. Based on how much of its profits the company chooses to reinvest or “retain”, we are then able to evaluate a company’s future ability to generate profits. Generally speaking, other things being equal, firms with a high return on equity and profit retention, have a higher growth rate than firms that don’t share these attributes.

When you first look at it, News’ ROE doesn’t look that attractive. A quick further study shows that the company’s ROE doesn’t compare favorably to the industry average of 12% either. However, we we’re pleasantly surprised to see that News grew its net income at a significant rate of 50% in the last five years. We reckon that there could be other factors at play here. Such as – high earnings retention or an efficient management in place.

We then compared News’ net income growth with the industry and we’re pleased to see that the company’s growth figure is higher when compared with the industry which has a growth rate of 5.0% in the same 5-year period.
