U.S. investors are wrapping up a wild summer with the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average on track for a fourth straight monthly gain. U.S. markets will be closed Monday for Labor Day, with investors set to get back into the swing of things Tuesday.
Dow Jones Market Data took a look at how major U.S. indexes have performed in the stretch from Labor Day through year-end. As shown in the chart above, based on historical data from 1971 through 2023, indexes have gained ground roughly 70% of the time over the end-of-year stretch:
The Dow has risen 72% of the time and on average gains 2.7% over this period.
The S&P 500 has risen 70% of the time and on average gains 2.8% over this period.
The Nasdaq Composite has risen 68% of the time and on average gains 3.4% over this period.
