U.S. Stock Indices Fall in Early 2026 as Recession Risk Nears 50% Threshold

According to a report from Yahoo Finance, major U.S. stock indices have seen declines in the early part of the year. This follows a period of significant gains for the S&P 500 in the previous year. The index has decreased approximately seven percent since the start of the year. The Dow Jones Industrial Average has seen a similar drop of about eight percent, while the Nasdaq Composite has fallen over ten percent.

Recession Probability Model Nears Critical Threshold

A recession probability model maintained by Moody’s indicates a 49% chance of a U.S. economic downturn. This assessment was based on data from February. Historical analysis of the model suggests that whenever its probability reading has exceeded 50% in the past, a recession has subsequently occurred within the following twelve months.

The architect of the model cited weak labor market figures and generally softening economic data since the end of the last year as primary reasons for the elevated probability. Recent employment data showed a net loss of jobs, contrary to expectations of growth, and the unemployment rate increased. Revised economic growth figures were also lower than initially reported. Inflation continues to persist above the central bank’s stated target.

Geopolitical Conflict Introduces New Economic Risk

The existing economic risks may be compounded by a recent geopolitical event. The model’s February probability reading did not account for the onset of a war involving Iran and the United States. This conflict has reportedly reduced global crude oil supply by a significant portion and driven prices higher. The model is noted to be sensitive to changes in energy costs, which have historically been a precursor to most U.S. recessions in the modern era. Analysts suggest that unless the conflict is resolved quickly, the probability of a recession is likely to rise above the critical 50% threshold.

For investors, the avoidance of a recession is considered crucial, as such events have historically been associated with substantial declines in the S&P 500.
