Stock Market Pressure Amid Fed Leadership Change from Powell to Warsh

According to a report from Yahoo Finance, major U.S. stock indexes have faced tougher conditions over the last five weeks, following a period where they reached record-closing highs within the preceding six months.

This recent weakness coincides with the approaching conclusion of Jerome Powell’s term as Federal Reserve chair, set for May 15. Powell was initially nominated for the role during the current President of the United States’s first, non-consecutive term and was later nominated for his current term by former President Joe Biden.

Since taking office in January 2025, the President has been openly critical of Powell and the Federal Open Market Committee for not pursuing more aggressive interest rate reductions. The President has expressed a preference for a federal funds rate significantly lower than the present range. Powell’s approach has been guided by the Fed’s mandate to stabilize prices and maximize employment, leading to several rate cuts since September 2024.

On January 30, the President nominated former Federal Open Market Committee member Kevin Warsh to succeed Powell. Warsh has over five years of prior experience on the Federal Reserve Board of Governors. Some observers suggest this potential leadership shift at the central bank may represent a pivotal moment for the stock market.
