(Alliance News) – At least one-third of the 1.5tn-1.6tn deposited in current accounts could flow into listed companies or businesses interested in going public, according to Giovanni Tamburi, who is proposing incentives to encourage investment in the real economy.
A survey by Eumetra, commissioned by the banker among 1,000 savers and reported by Corriere della Sera on Monday, indicates that 70% would be willing to invest in companies’ capital through suitable instruments. Some 45% would vote for whoever proposed incentives, while 62% believe government intervention is necessary.
The proposal comes as companies are struggling to raise capital and Milan’s stock market is recording few listings and numerous delistings. According to research by SDA Bocconi and Borsa Italiana, at least 1,000 Italian companies could access the market, compared with around 400 currently listed.
The main obstacles for savers are fears of losing their capital and excessive costs.
Simple instruments, a clear tax framework and easier access to the stock market could encourage the flow of resources, supporting growth and employment.
