U.S. stock futures point to a strong start to the week on Monday as Wall Street welcomes cooling energy prices and prepares for the official kickoff of third-quarter bank earnings.
According to the Oct. 12 contract on Polymarket, a Polygon (CRYPTO: POL) based prediction platform, traders are heavily bullish on the S&P 500 open. The “S&P 500 (SPX) Up or Down on October 12?” contract currently reflects a 78% chance of a higher open.
Why That Number Matters
Traders are leaning into positive index futures while evaluating Middle East headlines and incoming Q3 corporate earnings:
-
Positive Index Futures: The stock index futures indicate a green open across major benchmarks. Dow Jones futures are leading the advance, up 0.84%. S&P 500 futures rose 0.56%. Nasdaq 100 futures gained 0.45%, and Russell 2000 futures added 0.33%.
-
Cooling Oil Relieves Rate Pressures: Energy prices pulled back in early trading. Brent crude fell 1.27% to $103.39 a barrel, while WTI crude dropped 1.61% to $90.37 a barrel. The pullbacks offer relief following news that Iran rejected Washington’s latest response to its peace proposal as “insufficient” and threatened critical digital infrastructure across the region if fighting intensifies.
-
Big Bank Earnings Season Arrives: Wall Street’s focus is shifting to third-quarter corporate results. Major financial institutions—including JPMorgan Chase & Co. (NYSE:JPM), Bank of America Corp. (NYSE:BAC), Citigroup Inc. (NYSE:C), Wells Fargo & Company (NYSE:WFC), Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MS), and Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (NYSE:GS)—are scheduled to report quarterly results this week. Investors will be watching executive commentary on consumer health and net interest income amid elevated interest rates.
-
Economic Calendar: The bond market is closed on Monday for Columbus Day, though the equity market remains open. Later this week, investors will digest September Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation data, retail sales figures, and the Federal Reserve’s Beige Book.
The Bull Case and Market Outlook
Equities maintain strong momentum after all major stock indexes closed higher on Friday. As detailed in market commentary from Ed Yardeni, last week saw a notable shift as interest-rate-sensitive sectors led gains while Treasury yields edged down. Consumer Staples, Utilities, Consumer Discretionary, and Financials all posted gains as the rally broadened.
Market strategist Yardeni noted that Corporate America’s “Fabulous Earnings Momentum” (FEMO) continues to provide a solid foundation for stock valuations. Consensus expectations for third-quarter S&P 500 earnings growth have been revised upward to 30.6% year-over-year, with all 11 S&P 500 sectors projected to report positive revenue and profit growth simultaneously.
