Champion Iron Limited (ASX:CIA) just released its latest half-year report and things are not looking great. Revenues missed expectations somewhat, coming in at CA$404m, but statutory earnings fell catastrophically short, with a loss of CA$0.09 some 278% larger than what the analysts had predicted. The analysts typically update their forecasts at each earnings report, and we can judge from their estimates whether their view of the company has changed or if there are any new concerns to be aware of. We thought readers would find it interesting to see the analysts latest (statutory) post-earnings forecasts for next year.

Taking into account the latest results, the current consensus from Champion Iron’s 13 analysts is for revenues of CA$1.68b in 2027. This would reflect a satisfactory 2.1% increase on its revenue over the past 12 months. The statutory loss per share is expected to greatly reduce in the near future, narrowing 6,964% to CA$0.22. Yet prior to the latest earnings, the analysts had been anticipated revenues of CA$1.75b and earnings per share (EPS) of CA$0.044 in 2027. There looks to have been a significant drop in sentiment regarding Champion Iron’s prospects after these latest results, with a small dip in revenues and the analysts now forecasting a loss instead of a profit.

The average price target fell 6.6% to AU$3.56, implicitly signalling that lower earnings per share are a leading indicator for Champion Iron’s valuation. The consensus price target is just an average of individual analyst targets, so – it could be handy to see how wide the range of underlying estimates is. Currently, the most bullish analyst values Champion Iron at AU$4.79 per share, while the most bearish prices it at AU$2.05. Note the wide gap in analyst price targets? This implies to us that there is a fairly broad range of possible scenarios for the underlying business.

Looking at the bigger picture now, one of the ways we can make sense of these forecasts is to see how they measure up against both past performance and industry growth estimates. We can infer from the latest estimates that forecasts expect a continuation of Champion Iron’shistorical trends, as the 4.3% annualised revenue growth to the end of 2027 is roughly in line with the 5.0% annual growth over the past five years. By contrast, our data suggests that other companies (with analyst coverage) in a similar industry are forecast to see their revenues grow 5.8% per year. So it’s pretty clear that Champion Iron is expected to grow slower than similar companies in the same industry.

The Bottom Line

The biggest low-light for us was that the forecasts for Champion Iron dropped from profits to a loss next year. Unfortunately, they also downgraded their revenue estimates, and our data indicates underperformance compared to the wider industry. Even so, earnings per share are more important to the intrinsic value of the business. The consensus price target fell measurably, with the analysts seemingly not reassured by the latest results, leading to a lower estimate of Champion Iron’s future valuation.

With that said, the long-term trajectory of the company’s earnings is a lot more important than next year. We have estimates – from multiple Champion Iron analysts – going out to 2029, and you can see them free on our platform here.
