Artificial intelligence is producing real growth. The latest earnings releases show cloud revenue rose 103% at Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) and 39% at Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN). Businesses are buying computing power, and the companies supplying it are racing to expand capacity.
But selling more doesn’t automatically leave shareholders with more. The AI infrastructure spending boom requires cash today, while its financial rewards may arrive years later. Investors need to distinguish companies that can finance that expansion from their own businesses from those increasingly dependent on outside funding.
That makes free cash flow the first number to check before buying an AI stock.
Why Free Cash Flow Deserves Top Billing
Free cash flow generally means operating cash flow minus capital expenditures — the money spent on equipment, buildings, and infrastructure. It reveals whether a business generates enough cash to cover that investment. It is how much a company has left over after paying the bills that can be used to further invest in the business, pay down debt, pay shareholders dividends, or buy back stock.
Earnings don’t answer the same question. A server purchase consumes cash upfront, but its expense is typically spread across several years through depreciation. Profits can therefore look healthy while cash available after construction and equipment purchases disappears.
