Stock Market LIVE Updates, Monday, September 16, 2024: Indian shares surged after opening bell on Monday to create fresh all-time highs driven by metals amid a weaker dollar, while Bajaj Housing Finance listed at more than double its issue price after a stellar initial public offering (IPO) last week.
However, the benchmark indices pulled back from their record highs and were trading nearly flat.
At 12:00 PM, the BSE Sensex was down 10 points, or 0.01 per cent, at 82,880, while the Nifty 50 was up 0.1 per cent, at 25,358.
That apart, the BSE MidCap was trading flat, while the BSE SmallCap had gained 0.18 per cent.
Meanwhile, the FMCG index was the biggest loser, followed by the Oil and Gas and IT indices. Among gainers, Media, Healthcare, and Metal indices were the leaders.
Shares of Bajaj Housing Finance, the second-biggest home loan financier in the country by assets under management (AUM), debuted at more than double the offer price of Rs 70.
In other markets, Asian stocks dithered and the dollar slipped on Monday in a week that is almost certain to see the start of an easing cycle in the US, with investors flirting with the chance of an outsized move.
Central banks in Japan and the UK also meet this week, with both expected to stand pat for now, while a packed data schedule includes US retail sales and industrial production.
Meanwhile, holidays in China, Japan, South Korea and Indonesia made for thin trading. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan gained 0.3 per cent, after bouncing 0.8 per cent last week.
Japan’s Nikkei was shut but futures traded at 36,315 compared to a cash close of 36,581 as recent yen gains pressured exporters.
S&P 500 futures were little changed, while Nasdaq futures dipped 0.1 per cent. EUROSTOXX 50 futures added 0.2 per cent and FTSE futures 0.1 per cent. DAX futures also firmed 0.1 per cent.
Economic data from China over the weekend disappointed as industrial output growth slowed to a five-month low in August, while retail sales and new home prices weakened further.
As for the Federal Reserve, futures rallied early to push the chance of a half-point cut to 59 per cent, against 30 per cent a week ago. The odds have narrowed sharply after media reports revived the prospect of a more aggressive easing.
If the Fed does go by half a point, JPMorgan economist Michael Feroli expects policy makers to also project 100 basis points of cuts this year and 150 basis points for 2025.
The market has 114 basis points of easing priced in by Christmas and another 142 basis points for next year.
Oil prices were mixed as nearly a fifth of crude oil production in the Gulf of Mexico remained offline. Brent fell 4 cents to $71.57 a barrel, while US crude firmed 7 cents to $68.72 per barrel.
