The upcoming week features a key China meeting where details of stimulus are set to be unveiled.
Markets are watching Beijing, which is inevitably watching the U.S. elections, said Vishnu Varathan at Mizuho Securities (Singapore).
“Whispers are that Beijing may have to augment the size and details of the fiscal stimulus depending on whether it is a Harris or Trump presidency,” he said.
The sense is a Trump win will invoke larger stimulus, with a greater propensity to buffer yuan/asset market volatility, he said.
The assumed gradualism tied to a Harris win could allow for more spaced out fiscal/industrial strategy, while fear of Trump’s “shoot-from-the-hip” trade attacks—though later amenable to transactional walk-back—require different fiscal buffers, he said.
