Citizens Financial Group shares were almost flat on Friday, edging down 0.1% to about US$63, even after a fresh Q3 2026 update that delivered record total revenue and a sharp lift in profitability. The market barely blinked. The earnings story hit harder, with basic earnings per share at roughly US$1.50 and net income of US$636m pointing to clear operating momentum.
Short-term traders saw a sleepy tape. Longer-term holders now face a different puzzle, as surging quarterly profits meet a stock that still trades at a discount to cash flow based valuation models.

Citizens’ Efficiency Play: Bullish Execution Check
Bulls argue that Citizens Financial Group’s tech and Private Bank build should materially sharpen efficiency and earnings power.
“The company’s Reimagine the Bank initiative, focused on deploying AI and automation across complaints handling, chat and commercial prospecting, is now tied to a quantified target of about US$100 million in annualized pretax benefit exiting 2026 and is expected to reach roughly US$450 million by 2028.”
Q3 points in that direction. The efficiency ratio improved to 60% with 5.3% positive operating leverage and record total revenue. Management reaffirmed Reimagine the Bank targets and raised capital returns, which suggests early cost work is tracking the plan rather than lagging it.
Testing Deposit Cost Fears In Citizens’ Results
The bear story leans heavily on the risk that richer funding wipes out all that efficiency progress.
“Citizens Financial Group continues to show rising deposit costs, with interest bearing and total deposit costs both moving higher as competition for funding increases and Private Bank deposits contribute to a richer mix.”
Q3 data shows higher funding costs, yet net interest income still rose 2.7% and net interest margin moved to 3.19%. Private Bank deposits reached US$18.5b and loans grew US$2b while charge offs held at 37 bps. Deposit pressure is real, but so far the margin and credit profile are absorbing it rather than confirming a squeeze.
