The Dow has been on an upward trajectory today thanks to most of its heavy hitters gaining ground.
The blue-chip index was up 0.8%, or 362 points. The Dow is price weighted—meaning companies with large stock prices have the most influence.
Out of the nine stocks that cost more than $300, only one—Microsoft—was down on Thursday. All the other stocks were up for the day, led by Caterpillar, up 2.7%. It’s the fifth-heaviest weighted stock and the Dow’s top gainer for the day.
