Investing.com — Man Group’s assets under management jumped to a record $270.9 billion in the third quarter, helped by $10.1 billion of net inflows and a strong rebound in investment performance.
The Jersey-headquartered fund manager said in a trading statement on Friday that assets were up from $253.6 billion on June 30 and $213.9 billion a year earlier.
Investment performance added $5.9 billion over the three months to Sept. 30. Other movements added $1.3 billion, a category the company said includes currency fluctuations, leverage movements tied to performance, distributions and realisations across private markets assets, and money returned from CLO strategies.
Long-only equity funds, which buy shares and hold them rather than also betting on falls, drew the most new money.
They took in net inflows of $5.8 billion, and investment performance added $3.3 billion. Their assets rose to $113.2 billion from $104.2 billion.
Long-only credit funds, which invest in bonds and similar debt, took in $2.4 billion. Investment performance in the unit cost $0.4 billion, and other movements cost $0.3 billion, leaving assets at $40.6 billion, up from $38.9 billion. In total, long-only assets rose to $153.8 billion from $143.1 billion, on net inflows of $8.2 billion.
Man’s “liquid alternative” funds, which use hedge-fund-style strategies, had net inflows of $1.9 billion.
Investment performance added $3 billion and other movements $1.9 billion, lifting assets to $99.7 billion from $92.9 billion. Including private markets, alternative assets were $117.1 billion, up from $110.5 billion, on net inflows of $1.9 billion.
Private markets had no net inflows and no investment gains over the quarter. Other movements reduced assets by $0.2 billion, leaving them at $17.4 billion, down from $17.6 billion.
Within liquid alternatives, the “Solutions” category rose to $38.4 billion from $35.6 billion, risk premia strategies to $18.1 billion from $15.9 billion, trend-following to $9.4 billion from $8.3 billion, and multi-strategy to $4.4 billion from $3.8 billion.
Multi-asset risk parity fell to $6.4 billion from $7 billion. External alpha was $14.6 billion, up from $14.5 billion.
In private markets, private credit was unchanged at $14.1 billion, while CLOs slipped to $1.9 billion from $2 billion and real estate to $1.4 billion from $1.5 billion.
