NiSource just cleared another quarterly hurdle with its Q3 2026 report, and the stock wasted no time reacting. Shares closed at US$44.75, up about 2% on the day, as traders leaned into what looked like a clean headline beat and firmer earnings outlook.
The real story sits in profitability. Adjusted earnings per share of roughly US$0.27 and net income of US$129.1m keep the trailing net margin near 13.5%, a level that matters for a regulated utility funding a heavy capital plan. The question now is whether that calm, measured uptick in the share price matches the pressure still sitting on interest coverage and the balance sheet.
Investors who appreciate the earnings stability at NiSource but are concerned about pressure on interest coverage and the balance sheet may want to screen for utilities with stronger cushions using the list of solid balance sheet and fundamentals stocks (23 results)

NiSource just stretched its plan to a $40B, 7-year buildout. Ask Charlie what NiSource’s GenCo growth really adds to EPS.
NiSource’s growth story clears an earnings checkpoint
The bullish pitch is that NiSource can keep expanding its regulated footprint while keeping customers onside. That vision centers on the capital plan and GenCo ramp.
“Ongoing regulatory approvals and constructive relationships continue to support a consolidated 5 year capital investment outlook of US$21b for base utility capex with US$2b of upside and US$7.6b of GenCo capital, which can lift the regulated rate base and support earnings growth.”
Q3 adjusted EPS of US$0.27, a beat driven by higher usage and cost control, plus narrowed 2026 guidance and new 2027 targets, all point to this build out still tracking management’s roadmap.
NiSource balance sheet strain keeps bear case alive
The bear camp worries that the same build out loads NiSource with funding strain and slimmer flexibility.
“Significant capital expenditure needs for gas and electric infrastructure modernization and the expanded long term plan of about US$28.6b, combined with annual equity issuance of around US$400m to US$600m and additional debt, could pressure free cash flow and keep leverage elevated.”
New junior subordinated notes of US$750m, plus ongoing equity plans, indicate that leverage and dilution remain part of the story. Net margin compression versus the prior year and storm driven O&M also show that earnings support for that capital stack is not cost free.
