Quick Read

  • Paychex (PAYX) raised its quarterly dividend 10% to $1.19, delivering a 4.4% yield backed by $2.56B in operating cash flow that covers payouts at a 63% ratio.

  • ADP pairs big dividends with buybacks, while Paycom funds $345M in repurchases with new debt, making Paychex the only one centering capital returns on dividend growth.

  • The one scenario that breaks the dividend: falling small-business client counts and Fed rate cuts shrinking fees and float income simultaneously.

  • Just released. Our analysts combed the entire stock market and named the ten best stocks to buy right now, and Paychex didn’t make the cut. Enter your email to see the names that beat PAYX. The report is free. Enter your email and see if any of your stocks made the cut.

Paychex (NASDAQ:PAYX) shares closed Wednesday at $108.37. That is 12% lower than a year ago. The dividend went the other direction. In May the quarterly payout rose to $1.19 from $1.08, an increase of about 10%. The forward annual rate of $4.76 gives a yield of roughly 4.4%. Retirees should care less about the yield and more about where the cash comes from.

Recurring Fees Pay the Bills

Paychex serves about 840,000 customers and pays 1 in 11 U.S. private sector workers. Payroll is a monthly bill that businesses rarely skip. In fiscal 2026 that model produced $2.5567B in operating cash flow, while dividends totaled $1.6 billion. Dividends therefore used about 63% of operating cash. Measured against GAAP EPS of $5.51, the $4.43 per share paid out comes to roughly 80%. That is a full payout, but the cash flow covers it.

Chief Executive John Gibson tied the payout directly to that cash generation:

“Our durable business model and strong cash generation enabled us to return $2.2 billion to shareholders this fiscal year while continuing to invest in innovation and future growth.”

The raise history supports him. Since 2021, the quarterly dividend has moved up every spring: $0.66, $0.79, $0.89, $0.98, $1.08 and $1.19. The payout stayed flat at $0.62 through 2020, so the current run of raises began after the pandemic. That steady spring bump is exactly the kind of check retirees try to live on without touching shares, the structure we laid out in a free dividend ladder guide.
