While Wall Street was still in a state of disbelief late last week that Elon Musk made a flying Tesla (TSLA) Roadster, his SpaceX (SPCX) team came out with a not-so-small note on its investor relations page.
SpaceX earnings are coming out on Oct. 20 after the market close. The announcement was a surprise to many on the Street, as it’s common practice for earnings release dates to be shared weeks in advance.
But there may be a few reasons behind SpaceX’s rushed earnings date.
“Possible explanations include a desire to put updated financials on record ahead of further financing arrangements or share time-sensitive operational/strategic updates — either before counterparties do or to give the market time to digest the implications ahead of the sizeable lock-up releases (1.30 billion shares two days after earnings, 329 million on 10/24, and the remaining 857 million tranche of the 180-day group thereafter). Or the explanation could be as mundane as scheduling — it’s just hard to know,” said Evercore ISI analyst Kutgun Maral.
The fresh financing round seems to be the likeliest reason, followed closely by the lockup releases.
Reuters recently reported that SpaceX is seeking to raise $40 billion in financing to purchase advanced Nvidia (NVDA) AI chips.
The proposed package would include about $10 billion in bank loans and $30 billion in investment-grade debt.
Apollo Global Management (APO) is expected to help lead the financing with PIMCO among the potential participants. (Disclosure: Yahoo is a portfolio company of funds managed by affiliates of Apollo Global Management.)
The deal would underscore Musk’s ambitions to turn SpaceX into a major AI computing player, which will require a serious amount of new capital.
