How the markets moved today

The S&P 500 (SNPINDEX:^GSPC) rose 0.36% to 7,569, and the Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX:^IXIC) gained 0.83% to 25,372. What this means for investors

On Tuesday, Nov. 3, Marvell shares gained the day after plunging about 13% on its announcement of a $115 billion all-stock acquisition of Lumentum, a provider of optical components critical to efficient data transmission, a desirable feature for artificial intelligence systems. The risk of share dilution from the deal combined with Toronto-Dominion Bank‘s TD Cowen issuing a Hold downgrade, contributed to Marvell’s stock decline.

The fact that Marvell shares experienced an uptick today signals that Wall Street may have considered the stock oversold. After all, Marvell’s move to own Lumentum is poised to turbocharge revenue growth.

Before the deal, Marvell had already raised its revenue outlook for its 2028 fiscal year (FY), ended Jan. 31, 2028, to $20 billion, and set a FY2031 target of $70 billion to $90 billion in sales. This represents massive growth from its FY2026 revenue of $8.2 billion.

Lumentum adds another fast-growing business to Marvell’s offerings. Lumentum announced fiscal Q1 earnings on Nov. 2, reporting a spectacular 137% year-over-year increase in sales to $1.3 billion. It’s no wonder Wall Street is reassessing the acquisition today.
