Quick Read

  • Meta’s $9.89 billion legal settlement crushed Q3 EPS by 33%, dragging the S&P 500 lower even as two-thirds of its stocks gained.

  • NVIDIA fell 6% and Alphabet dropped 5% over the past month, amplifying index losses because market-cap weighting gives mega-caps outsized influence.

  • Meta burned $2.1 billion in free cash flow in Q3, raised full-year expenses to $179 billion, and posted its second straight EPS miss.

One Number: 337 Stocks Rose and the Index Still Fell

On Thursday, October 22, 2026, 337 S&P 500 stocks finished higher. Only 159 declined and 1 was unchanged across 497 tracked constituents. The index still closed lower. Most stocks rose and the benchmark fell, and that mismatch is a risk many retirement portfolios carry without the owners knowing it.

There's a prominent upward-pointing green arrow visible. What 337 Gainers Reveal About Your Index Fund

The S&P 500 is weighted by market value, so the biggest stocks have undue influence on the index’s direction. Many investors use an index fund for broad market exposure, and those portfolios tilt heavily toward technology. One major S&P 500 index fund held 519 positions as of June 30, 2026, but Information Technology made up 38.0% of net assets and Communication Services added another 9.7%.

The concentration shows up clearly at the top. NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA) is valued at $5.09 trillion, Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) at $5.07 trillion, Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) at $3.97 trillion and Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) at $3.89 trillion. When these giants slip together, hundreds of smaller gainers cannot pull the index up with them.

Thursday’s trigger was Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META), a $1.42 trillion company. Its third-quarter GAAP diluted EPS of $3.83 fell short of the $5.70 consensus by 32.79%. A $9.89 billion charge tied to an August 2026 settlement with 52 state attorneys general over teen mental health litigation weighed on the result. Without the charge, EPS would have been $7.40. Revenue of $64.60 billion rose 26.1% and beat estimates, but total costs climbed 68% to $51.61 billion. Operating margin narrowed to 20% from 40%.
