One Number: 30% of 2028 Capacity at Risk
About 30% of the data-center capacity the U.S. plans to add in 2028 could be at risk, according to a UBS estimate reported by Reuters. That figure is an analyst estimate of proposed capacity additions. It is separate from capital spending companies have already committed. It matters most to NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA), because its growth story depends on those buildings getting finished.
Much of the AI selloff has been treated as a valuation reset. The 30% warning raises a different question: can the power, transmission, construction labor, cooling, financing and local approvals behind the AI boom arrive on the schedule investors expect? Delays anywhere along that chain can affect the entire investment thesis.
What It Means for AI’s Biggest Supplier
NVIDIA’s latest results show how much depends on new capacity. In the second quarter of fiscal 2027, Data Center revenue reached $89.023 billion, up 117% year over year. Management guided third-quarter revenue to $108.0 billion plus or minus 2% (that figure is management guidance).
To support that growth, NVIDIA’s supply obligations rose to $279.00 billion, mostly tied to memory purchases for Vera Rubin production. Those dollars are committed. The capacity UBS identified is still proposed. That gap is the core risk: NVIDIA has locked in its supply while some of the buildings meant to house the chips exist only as plans.
