Tripadvisor has spent the past year caught between bold AI partnerships, activist pressure and a plan to pivot hard into experiences like Viator. Investors who held Tripadvisor over the past year are down 44.8%, including dividends. If you had bought in back on 28 October 2025, when bulls were leaning on experiential travel and rising margins and bears stressed AI disruption and traffic erosion, which part of that original thesis failed to fully allow for what actually unfolded?

The useful thing about a Narrative is that the reasoning is checkable: the assumptions sit beside the argument, and together they imply an estimated Fair Value you can disagree with.

Tripadvisor has already moved. See which of 26 high quality undervalued stocks still trade below our estimates.

The Two Tripadvisor Stories Investors Had To Weigh

The shares cost US$16.42 at the start of the period, with Tripadvisor caught between a growth pitch around experiences and a cautionary view on AI and regulation.

On the optimistic side, the Fair Value was US$17.77. This was built on Tripadvisor growing its experiences marketplace, such as Viator and TheFork, and using AI driven recommendations and loyalty tools to deepen engagement and support higher net margins.

The cautious Narrative put Fair Value at US$13. It treated rising GDPR style compliance costs and heavier competition from Google Travel, Booking Holdings and Airbnb as key risks to Tripadvisor’s market share and earnings power.

What The Tripadvisor Evidence Actually Showed

The sale of TheFork to American Express for US$700 million and management’s push to focus Tripadvisor on Viator backed the bullish idea that experiences would sit at the centre of the story. At the same time, Q2 2026 revenue of US$441.9 million and net margin of 5.2%, both lower than a year earlier, challenged expectations of faster profitability improvement. The evidence cut both ways.

The hinge assumption was not just that experiences could grow. It was that they could lift group economics. When you test another travel platform, track whether segment expansion lines up with higher overall net margin rather than just a bigger revenue mix.

What Tripadvisor’s Lower Price Asks You To Believe Now

Tripadvisor now trades at US$8.94, with this refreshed Narrative placing its Fair Value above that level based on a heavier tilt toward Experiences and AI products rather than SEO dependent hotel and media lines.

The key assumption is that reallocating capital into experiences, AI driven trip planning and portfolio streamlining ultimately improves Tripadvisor’s overall margins and cash generation.
