Why Coinbase (COIN) Stock Is Falling Today

What Happened?

Shares of blockchain infrastructure company Coinbase (NASDAQ:COIN) fell 3.1% in the morning session after a broad crypto market downturn prompted by a hawkish monetary outlook from the Bank of Japan and escalating geopolitical risks. The crypto market came under pressure following reports that Japan’s central bank was planning to raise interest rates. At the same time, rising tensions between the U.S. and Iran reduced investor demand for riskier assets. This sentiment was reflected in Bitcoin’s drop to retest the $62,000 level and $131 million in outflows from Bitcoin ETFs on August 13. Adding to the negative sentiment, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) canceled its open meeting planned for the same day, citing an “unforeseen scheduling issue,” which created further uncertainty in the sector.

After the initial drop, the shares shed some of the losses and rose to $150.63, down 2.1% from the previous close.

The stock market overreacts to news, and big price drops can present good opportunities to buy high-quality stocks. Is now the time to buy Coinbase? Access our full analysis report here, it’s free.

What Is The Market Telling Us

Coinbase’s shares are extremely volatile and have had 53 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The previous big move we wrote about was 7 days ago when the stock gained 5.2% on the news that the July jobs report showed an unexpected loss of 23,000 jobs, signaling a cooling labor market. Economists had forecast a gain of around 80,000 nonfarm payrolls. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate held steady at 4.1%. This weaker-than-expected data led investors to bet on the possibility of an interest rate cut by the Federal Reserve.

The logic, often described as “bad news is good news” for the market, suggests that a slowing economy could deter the central bank from further rate hikes, and potentially encourage cuts to stimulate growth. This outlook generally makes borrowing cheaper for companies and increases the relative attractiveness of stocks.

Coinbase is down 36.3% since the beginning of the year, and at $150.63 per share, it is trading 61.1% below its 52-week high of $387.27 from October 2025. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Coinbase’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at only $586.35.
