U.S. stock futures are leaning slightly lower early Friday as Wall Street navigates geopolitical stalemates, soaring oil prices, and fresh regulatory scrutiny on prediction markets.

The Polymarket crowd, a Polygon (CRYPTO: POL) based prediction platform, was nearly evenly split for the Oct. 23 trading session. The “S&P 500 (SPX) Up or Down on October 23?” contract currently reflects a 49% chance of a higher open.

Oct 23 Polymarket Odds For S&P 500 Opening.

Why That Number Matters

Traders are balancing a subdued futures market against sticky inflation drivers and significant corporate earnings:

  • Slightly Negative Index Futures: Equity futures are pointing to a moderately red open. Dow Jones futures dropped 0.30%. S&P 500 futures fell 0.14%, Nasdaq 100 futures slipped 0.03%, and Russell 2000 futures declined 0.23%.

  • Geopolitics & Surging Oil: Iran told Pakistan’s army chief that it will refuse talks with Washington until its demands—including the lifting of the U.S. blockade—are met, reiterating that all enriched nuclear materials will remain in Iran, Reuters reported. Meanwhile, CFTC Enforcement Director David Miller confirmed the agency is probing suspicious oil trading activity surrounding the U.S.-Iran conflict. Energy prices continued to surge amid the gridlock; Brent climbed 0.83% to $114.11 a barrel, and WTI crude crossed the century mark, gaining 1.13% to $100.59 a barrel.

  • Earnings & Eco Data: Friday’s economic docket includes October’s S&P flash U.S. manufacturing and services PMI at 9:45 a.m. ET, followed by the final University of Michigan consumer survey at 10:00 a.m. ET. The earnings calendar features American Express Co. (NYSE:AXP), SLB NV (NYSE:SLB), and more.

The Bear Case and Market Outlook

While geopolitical tensions and high energy costs weigh heavily on traditional equities, the AI sector remains a massive focal point for valuations. Valuation expert Aswath Damodaran highlighted the upcoming Anthropic IPO, noting that the AI firm could price between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion.

Damodaran cautioned that young AI companies are currently being priced on unconventional metrics like annualized revenue run rates (ARR)—similar to how dot-com era stocks were priced on “eyeballs”—making them incredibly difficult to evaluate through traditional intrinsic valuation methods.
