The S & P 500 fell Monday after the U.S. and Iran traded strikes for the first time in a month. West Texas Intermediate oil prices surged 2%, trading above $85 per barrel. Jim Cramer said he was “increasingly disturbed” by the jump in oil prices, citing the negative effect on stocks tied to the commodity. Separately, Apple shares are trading lower on Tim Cook’s last day as CEO, marking the end of a 15-year reign. John Ternus takes over Tuesday and has a tough act to follow . 2. Nvidia advanced more than 1% after announcing it is investing $3.5 billion in chip designer MediaTek. Jim would prefer that the company buy back shares rather than invest in more companies. In his Sunday Column , he wrote that Nvidia was a casualty of Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh’s speech on Friday at the Jackson Hole Symposium, where he suggested that interest rates may need to rise further, sending Nvidia shares down 4.5%. Higher rates could further complicate the AI data center buildout, limiting Nvidia’s growth, by making it more expensive to finance new projects. Portfolio director Jeff Marks said the MediaTek deal also appears to be a potential competitive move against Broadcom , which has built a leading position in custom AI chips. The Club recently halved its Broadcom position in what Jim called a “very shrewd” move to reduce our exposure to the AI trade. 3. CrowdStrike gained 4% after a post by prominent AI podcaster and writer Dwarkesh Patel that reinforces our thesis that enterprises need to aggressively spend on cybersecurity to protect themselves in the era of AI. “The stock is up because that piece by Dwarkesh would be obviated by CrowdStrike being able to stop the agents,” Jim said. Palo Alto Networks was also up Monday, and we took advantage of the strength to trim our position and pocket gains. 4.
